Zoe Russell is a mother of three, (George 7, Olivia 5 and Wilf 3) and a midwife based at the Calderdale Royal Hospital. In April she will be running the 26.2 mile
London Marathon to raise money for the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths - The Cot Death Charity.
Around 10 babies die suddenly and unexpectedly each week and FSID is dedicated to helping to prevent this. The charity helps educate families and health professionals alike on the risks of cot death and supports those families who have tragically experienced it. They also provide a network of befrienders and a Care of the Next Infant (CONI) scheme to support parents with subsequent babies.
"I chose to run for FSID because it is a charity which is close to my heart, keeping babies sleeping safely is a hugely important part of our job. It just seemed like the natural choice." Zoe told us.
Zoe has the full support of her husband Ben and her three children. Her father Malcolm Downing is playing a key role in her training as he ran many marathons in his day, "Dad even takes me to the gym when the weather's really bad so I've got no excuses!!" Zoe is fully focused and determined to make the most of this once in a life time experience. "It's really hard work but if I can help save the life of just one baby, it'll be so worth while."
To help with the fundraising, Zoe has already held a Zumba Party and is selling tickets for an auction, on Friday 24th February at the Malthouse, Rishworth. Tickets are £15 each, with entertainment from the wonderful Dame Shirley Bazzey, a DJ, a table magician and a pie and peas supper.
Auction lots include British Super Bikes passes, 2 night stay at a luxury hotel in Windermere, cosmetic teeth whitening, a football stadium tour, meals at some of Halifax's top restaurants and many more. If you are interested in coming or donating an auction prize please contact her on: zoeruns4fsid@hotmail.co.uk
Alternatively if you wish to sponsor her you can do so online at:
www.justgiving.com/zoe-russell4fsid
This is an amazing charity whose work has led to a 70% reduction in cot death numbers since 1991, saving nearly 19,000 lives. Hopefully through their pioneering work, these tragedies can be prevented.

RSPCA Pet of the Month Mystique
1/10/2011
Meet Mystique, our longest stay lady of the kennel block. Mystique came into the Animal Centre last September due to her owner's ill health, and has been waiting patiently for a new home for quite some time. Mystique is a very loyal dog and loves nothing more than to go for a walk accompanied by her teddy which she carries in her mouth. Mystique is a calm, quiet dog who would be well suited to a single person or mature couple who like and understand the Akita breed. We can not understand why she has been over looked for so long but are hopeful she will find her forever home very soon.
Could you offer a home to this special dog?
